About Messiah

Librettist Charles Jennens drew texts from the King James version of the Bible as well as the psalter from The Book of Common Prayer. The result is a remarkable blending of passages which propel the story forward and others which provide commentary and illumination. In a tremendous burst of creative energy, Händel composed “Messiah” in 24 days during 1741. The highly successful premiere took place in Dublin in 1742. The first London performance at Covent Garden the following year was not as well received. After being put aside for several years, future performances of the oratorio gained in popularity and it has since become on of the best-loved and most performed works in Western Music.

In Händel’s day, a small organ would have been used for continuo in the choruses. We are pleased to use St. Christopher’s pipe organ, recently refurbished and rebuilt by Fowler Organ Company. Jeffery Walker will conduct all but the choruses from the harpsichord, as Händel would have done.
